Captain Tom Labarbiera: Courage Beyond the Flames!
Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, becoming a firefighter was more than just a dream for Tom Labarbiera; it was a legacy. But his graduation from the Fire Academy took an unexpected turn, thrusting him into the unimaginable horror of 9/11 on his very first day.
For 21 harrowing days, Tom stood tall amidst the rubble of Ground Zero. He wasn't just a probie - he was a beacon of hope, leading search and rescue efforts, tending to the injured, and honoring the fallen. This defining moment wasn't just the start of his career; it was the birth of a true hero, a leader who placed the needs of others above his own.
And heroism wasn't a one-time event for Tom. Years later, witnessing a car engulfed in flames on the Tappan Zee Bridge, he didn't hesitate. The flames might have consumed the vehicle, but they couldn't touch the fire within Tom. Without a second thought for his own safety, he pulled the driver from the inferno, once again proving his unwavering courage.
But Captain Tom's greatest heroism transcends acts of bravery. He's a hero to his three children, Thomas, Douglas, and Sara. He's the dad who instills a love for adventure, teaching them to ski and conquer mountain bike trails, forging memories that will last a lifetime. He's the dad who's always there, cheering them on at every event. He is their rock, their hero, a constant source of love and strength.
Now it's our turn to be his hero. After years of selfless service, Tom faces his toughest battle yet – 9/11-related cancer. Tom gifts us everyday with his infectious laugh, his unwavering loyalty and if you have been lucky enough…a damn good lasagna! It’s our turn to give back. Let's honor his sacrifices by supporting those helping him fight this fight. Let's help him recover, not just for himself, but for the incredible man he is – a son, a brother, a firefighter, a father, and a true hero who continues to inspire us all.
Tom is surrounded by love. He, his siblings and his mom are incredibly close, cherishing days filled with laughter, delicious meals, and dancing together. They've built a lifetime of memories, and now they're by his side every step of the way as he fights cancer. They're doing everything they can to give him the best chance, and they could really use our support.
~Thank you
Facing cancer treatment shouldn't mean facing financial hardship. Cancer treatment disrupts life, often impacting income. This financial stability will allow Tom's family to maintain a sense of normalcy and help free him from worry, allowing him to focus all his energy on healing and recovery.
Cancer treatments can be grueling, leaving patients with little energy for everyday tasks like cooking. A meal train ensures they have healthy, delicious food readily available, taking a massive burden off their shoulders. Often, caregivers are stretched thin during treatment. A steady stream of meals frees them up to focus on the patient's needs or simply take a well-deserved break.
Tom loves hearing a good story! Stories have healing power! A good story can whisk someone away from the realities of illness, offering a temporary escape from pain, worry, and discomfort. Immersing themselves in a different world can provide a much-needed mental break and a chance to recharge emotionally. Let's keep Tom's spirits up.
